Director's Report - May 9, 2023

REPORT TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Mathews Memorial Library
Bette Dillehay, Director
May 9, 2023

The report that follows outlines current administrative matters and ongoing activities that occurred during the report period.
Financial Report
Current Reporting Period
Information presented in the current financial report is a statement of resources and expenses for a two-month period ending April 30, 2023. Operational expenses for the report period totaled $12,587.92. As noted in previous reports, several line items reflect an increase over the approved budget appropriation In the case of line item 5240, charges of slightly over $5,000 made during the previous fiscal year were allocated to the current fiscal year. Line item 5230 reflects charges that also exceed the budget as the library continues to sustain significant charges in support of the community wi-fi program. While several federal and state grants have been made available, these sums are not immediately reflected in the county’s library financial documents.
Salaries and Related Expenses
The amount budgeted for salaries and related benefits for FY 22/23 is $331,238 or $27,603 per month. A current financial activity report reflecting the amount spent as of March 31, 2023, shows a total of $259,627.32 or 76.38% of the total budgeted amount for FY22/23. It should be noted that, in July, the County approved a 5% increase in salaries. It could not be confirmed that this increase is reflected in the current trial balance report dated April 11, 2023.
Patrons
The number of active patrons remain stable. Circulation of materials during the report period decreased slightly; however, access to books, music and movies through digital services subscribed to by the library continues to increase. This latter service of digital circulation has exceeded that of traditional hard copy materials for the past several months.
Projects/Programs
The library is moving into a very busy summer season of programs for all ages. Three performances are scheduled for Soothin’ Summer Sounds. These will take place in June, July and August. Our youth program opens with the return of Highland Games on Friday, June 16th followed by the summer program for youth, ages 6-12, This year’s theme is “All together Now” and focuses on friendship and community.
