Revolutionary War Virginia State Pensions is an index to and scanned images of the surviving records that veterans and their widows presented to the county courts to certify their eligibility for pension.

War of 1812 database is an index of approximately 40,000 names, published by the Commonwealth of Virginia, appearing in Pay Rolls of Militia Entitled to Land Bounty Under the Act of Congress of Sept. 28, 1850 (Richmond, 1851) and its supplement, Muster Rolls of the Virginia Militia in the War of 1812 (Richmond, 1852). The supplement includes militia companies and parts of companies omitted in the published Pay Rolls.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War.

Free African Americans of North Carolina and Virginia has Paul Heinegg's collection of genealogies about African American families living in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Gwynn's Island Project is a website dedicated to African Americans whose ancestral home place was Gwynn's Island in Mathews County, Virginia.

Unknown No Longer is a database launched in 2011 by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture to make accessible biographical details of enslaved Virginians from unpublished historical records in its collections. The site provides researchers with the ability to discover information on ancestors not found in other sources.

  

Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild is a firm that searches, copies, deciphers, and types passenger lists. 

Ellis Island Records is an archive with millions of records for information on individual Ellis Island passengers. Between 1892 and 1924, more than 22 million passengers and members of ships’ crews entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York.

Finding Passenger Lists 1820 to the 1940’s is a listing of indexes of passenger lists (also called immigration records or ship manifests) for ships that sailed to the United States from 1820 to the 1940s.

 

Virginia Chronicle is a historical archive of Virginia newspapers, providing free access to full text searching and digitized images of over a million newspaper pages. This collection contains 213,142 issues comprising 1,630,592 pages and 238,537 articles.

Gwynn’s Island Museum originally established as a Community Project in 1991, the Gwynn’s Island Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Gwynn’s Island and Mathews County, Virginia.

Mathews County Historical Society was established in 1964 to preserve, study and promote the unique heritage of Mathews County, Virginia.

Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Virginia (MPAAGHS) was formed in September of 2004. Its mission is to create and provide opportunities to encourage and enable African Americans to research, document, and publish their family histories and genealogies.

Tidewater Genealogical Society was formally organized in 1969. The primary geographical area of interest is Virginia, with emphasis on that part east of the Fall Line. The Society is dedicated to encouraging and sustaining interest in genealogical affairs through education and research programs designed to assist members in their search for ancestors.

Virginia Genealogical Society was organized in 1960 to foster interest in genealogical, biographical, historical, and heraldic research; publish genealogy information, and share accumulated knowledge.

Virginia Museum of History & Culture The VMHC is owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society—a private, non-profit organization. It is the oldest cultural organization in Virginia, and one of the most distinguished history organizations in the nation.

Archeological Society of Virginia is a non-profit organization that focuses on archaeological projects in Virginia for over 50 years. Members of the society have participated in hundreds of archeological excavations since its inception in 1940.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a non-profit, women’s organization for the descendants of individuals who aided in achieving American independence. 

National Genealogical Society (NGS) is a service organization that leads and educates the national genealogical community and assists members in tracing family histories.

United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is the outgrowth of many local memorials, monuments, and Confederate home associations and auxiliaries to camps of United Confederate Veterans that were organized after the War Between the States.
