MATHEWS MEMORIAL LIBRARY
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MARCH 8, 2022
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairman, James Pavik, at 5PM
on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. In attendance was James Pavik, Dana Brown, Jackie Ingram, Sue Jeanette, Carolyn Taylor, Bette Dillehay, Nancy Fisher and Cathy Nelson from FOL. Alexis Foster joined by Zoom.
Minutes were provided and approved by all.
Bette noted that Jackie Ingram’s term will expire in May, 2022, Also Dana Brown who replaced the term of Richard Pogue. Dana accepted to continue with a new term.
DIRECTOR REPORT: The operating expenses for this period was $14,034.34 which was a 21.82% increase. Payments of $18,495.75 were reimbursed through the Federal Emergency Connectivity Fund which supported the WiFi program. There are 50 units of WiFi available for
patrons with a monthly cost of $1000. Reimbursements back to library are paid but late.
The budgeted salaries were supposed to show a 5% increase from the county but has not shown up yet in the budget for FY22/23. The Library requested an increase of $55,000 for the
FY22/23 year. Have not had a response on this yet.
Niche Academy is available under the Library website to improve training in a lot of different
areas. Training for computers and Broadband users especially.
Carol Owens, Youth Assistant, has resigned ( Jan. 31,2022 ) after 5 years in this position. Jackie Craven, already a weekend staffer is fulfilling that position at this time.
The number of patrons now stands at 10,325.
The library provides needed services for the community with computers, copiers, faxes, and materials.
The Middle School students are now using the school’s renovated library.
The AARP provides tax preparation assistance to the community with reservations required. Tomorrow, March 9, the Director, will present a program at High School on the special exhibit of lifestyles through Photos (1922-2022) of our county. This exhibit is to be viewed by the community at the Library.
FOL representive, Cathy Nelson, gave a report on the Friends upcoming Spring meeting for Tues, April 19, at 4PM. Speaker will be Bette Dillehay on the lifestyles of the county shown
by the exhibit of the Photos (1922-2022). 500 Newsletters are being sent out early April. A request was for any news from the Library to be added. Book Store hours will be changed
to 9:30am -2pm on Saturdays.
NEW BUSINESS: There is a leak in the roof of the library in Director’s office. Mr. Jones, Supervisor, has had it inspected with cost of repair of $40,000. This cost is covered in
Capital Improvements from the county.
From the Friends a gift of $70,000 was donated by Ann Thomas Deaver. The Friends is
suggesting to use this gift to form a Reading Garden in the already established Courtyard.
Architecture plans from before can be used. A local landscaper will be used to enhance this
project. The Trustees gave their approval to pursue this project.
Meeting was adjourned at 6PM. The next meeting will be Tues, May 10, 2022.
