BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
TUESDAY, MAY 14, 2024


The Board of Trustees Meeting was called to order by Carolyn Taylor at 5PM. Along with
Carolyn also attending was Dana Brown, Michael Miskovsky, Deona Pavik, Bette Dillehay,
and Joi Ball representing the Friends.
Minutes had been presented prior to meeting for view. They were approved by all.
Bette gave the financial report noting that all line items during the current reporting remained
stable. There was a 19% increase over the previous year on the use of books and related
materials. The use of electronic versions is at a higher percentage. There are some hard
drives that have to be replaced.
The salaries which are budgeted is a 5% increase as noted for FY 23/24. Even though
there has been a change in some of the employment the budget salary is stable.
Library employees are receiving a much lower salary than surrounding counties. A review
of this concern is being evaluated.
The current count of patrons is 10,935 which is 2.24% over last year
A count is being made by the entrances of all doors.
There is a suggestion to make a count dividing men and women. More Teens are coming each
day to the Youth Room.
The Pergola Structure is still a plan waiting to happen!
On April 3 a bus trip to the Richmond Science Museum took 33 young people. Also on
May 22 a bus trip will be traveling to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond carrying 45
adults. A special exhibit will be viewed of the life of Julia Childs. The end of June will be 2
weeks of fun at the Library for children. The Highland Games will be June 14th celebrating our
20 years of involvement. And then to round out the summer with some Summer Sounds in the
Library.
Joi Ball brought some extra newsletters to leave at the Library. Others were mailed or
emailed to all FOL members. They have 2 Little Libraries and there are several others around
the county. If there is an interest by anyone the Friends can help to make that happen.
The Mathews Memorial Library Scholarship received an application from Norfleet Lewis.
Motion was made by Deona and seconded by Dana to award the scholarship to him.
Motion was passed by all.
Bette announced that the W. Robert Orrell annuity monthly payment of $416.67 has stopped
as of May 2021 due to the death of his wife. More info might be followed at a later date.
Meeting adjourned at 5:50pm.
Next meeting will be Tuesday, July 16 at 5pm.
