BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2023
The Board of Trustees Meeting was called to order at 5 PM by Carolyn Taylor. Those also attending were Bette Dillehay, Michael Miskovsky, Rob Quartel, Dana Brown, Deona Pavik,
and Joi Ball representing the Friends.
No minutes were from the March meeting since a quorum was not present to hold business.
Bette reported on library matters and activities. The Wi-Fi is the most popular in the library.
Technology has made a big impact on activities.
Budgeted salaries and benefits have not shown the 5% increase which was approved.
The number of active patrons remains stable. Even though distribution of materials decreased
access to all books, movies, and music the digital items increase.
The Soothin’ Summer Sounds are scheduled for June 15, July 13, and August 31. A grant from Performing Arts makes these popular summer programs possible.
ON Friday, June 16th, the Highland Games will be held at Piankatank Ruritan property. This is a
popular program for youth, ages 6-12. The Theme this year is “All Together Now” which focuses on friendship and community.
A Survey was given out on Digital Learning. 84 responses were received noting the technology related skills and needs. A workshop will be held about Digital Learning.
A scholarship is offered to a graduating senior. Only 3 applicants responded, Neither
applicant fit into the criteria requested on the application. Due to this, no one will be
receiving the scholarship this year.
Joi Ball, with the Friends stated a booth was set up for May Faire. Not much foot traffic
but did give out information about the Book Store on Saturdays. Stated that the Friends
made available the shed which is in the back.
Bette related that the pagoda has been removed. Power washing has been done and
painting is next. A new design for that area is being prepared by Tim and Frances Hudgins.
The Bylaws of the Mathews Memorial Library Board of Trustees was passed out for our
review for next meeting.
